A 23-year-old man was arrested Friday on hate-crime charges after he threw a Quran in a toilet at Pace University on two separate occasions, police said.
Treatment of the Quran is a sensitive issue for Muslims, who view the book as a sacred object and mistreating it as an offense against God. The religion teaches that the Quran is the direct word of God.
But so do Christians view the Bible and the Jews the Old Testament. Any religious person should be offended if they found their Holy relics in a toilet. As indeed Christians were offended in 1987 when Andres Serrano mixed blood, urine and a crucifix in a vat and photographed his creation calling it "Piss Christ". There is nothing wrong with asking that artists like this not to be supported with public funds but I do not recall anyone asking him to be arrested for felony hate crime.
So here is my advice to Stanislav: Go back and take a photo of the Koran swimming in the toilet and call it "Holy Shit Mohammed" and frame it. Then at least you have the Supreme Court ruling of Miller v. California (1973) to keep the cops off your back. By calling it art, at least your attempt to express your feelings will be protected by the First Amendment.
