Oakland Airport to U.S. Marines: You're Not Worthy

advertisement

"On September 27th 204 Marines and soldiers who were returning from Iraq were not allowed into the passenger terminal at Oakland International Airport.

Instead they had to deplane about 400 yards away from the terminal where the extra baggage trailers were located. This was the last scheduled stop for fuel and food prior to flying to Hawaii where both were based.

While waiting for the bus to the airport, all personnel were in quarantined in a fenced area and were not allowed to leave." Nevertheless, Oakland forbade them from entering its terminal.

According to the Marine, a Lieutenant who served in Afghanistan with the same unit in 2006 noted that Oakland had treated troops the same way before. He "was almost arrested by the TSA for getting belligerent about them not letting the Marines into the terminal," despite more rigorous screening prior to landing in Oakland.

Both JFK airport and in Germany had no problem with the Marines entering their terminals.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If its the TSA causing the fuss then that are in for a bad day, TSA is federal, and they have the same ultimate boss as the Marines.

I bet if someone other than US Marines were to have had this happen it would end up as some racial/religeous/ethnic fiasco in which the TSA and the airport would have to immediately apologize.

I'd like to know a little more before jumping to conclusions. Did the airport have some reason to believe there might be a threat to the men's safety? Okay, it's a long shot, but "security" is a great all-purpose excuse for all sorts of violations of human dignity at airports these days.

I'm seeking a clarification: were the soldiers barred from the terminal by the Port of Oakland, who runs the airport, or by the TSA, a federal entity?

For more details re this story, the most thorough coverage I've seen (with some good links to related articles) is Here (also, that weblog will probably have good coverage of updates as they occur).

It has always struck me that there is a lot of bizarre thinking in the Northern CA area-- I'm not sure why, but it does seem to be the case. I just came across THIS ARTICLE on NV-- on a different topic, but weird stuff at Folsom Street. (I wondered where this was-- reading the article, it turns out it was in...San Francisco). Could it be...something in the water? Maybe something funny in the earth's magnetic field in that area? I wonder what the cause is?

Oakland must be a really weird place-- here's a poll in a local paper. Please vote in this Leftist Poll. (Also check out the results so far).

And don't say they aren't being democratic-- After I voted, I tried to vote again- and the poll let me (I actually voted 3 times before I grew tired of playing at being a leftist and moved on (pun intended?)

Interesting dearth of choices on that reader poll.

By the way, Ahmadinejad's remarks will haunt him.

Although his admirers (and there are man, even in the U.S. have been trying hard to give them a "spin" that will make him seems as a moderate-- that he really didn 't mean that there were no gays in Iran (just that they haven't come out of the closet yet), that he really doesn't want to eliminate Israel (his remarks weren't interpreted properly), that he really didn't deny the Holocaust (just that he thinks its important to spend a lot of time and money, and do research and hold conferences to see if it really existed-- he feels that this is a truly important current issue).

Actually, I do believe he's guilty of what I call "Arafart Syndrome"-- he comes off very moderate in front of western audiences, but says more radical things at home, when the western media aren't present.

Plus-- he is delusional...in all probability, psychotic.

I think Maynard's zeal spun out of control and left him in absolute denial. His admirers in the U.S. have truly lost their way. It's really sad.

I heard the "excuses" by OAK officials included the troops hadn't "been screened by TSA" and "they had weapons on the plane."

Well, I returned from Iraq in April and nobody gets screened de-planing, that happens before boarding.
We also had weapons. We left them on the plane with a "weapons watch."
I also heard the charter airline flying the plane didn't alert OAK that they were having special visitors. BFD. The Marine leadership on that plane was quite capable of controlling the troops during what could have been a comfortable pit stop.
    OAK is a disgrace.

The sniveling morons who implemented the mistreatment of these heroes all need to be fired and conscripted into the military. Where is the ACLU and its ilks when it comes to these types of offenses? Those military personnel are the backbone of this nation and deserve first class treatment, not abuse. The sooner California falls into the Pacific the better!

I agree, though in the interest of full disclosure I must confess that that would mean this Renoite's drive to the coast would be that much shorter.

Just drop in a little napon and cook them down - Oakland deserves just that. How dare them treat our troops that way. It is truly an outrage. Someone posted "let them be conscripted into the military". I wouldn't want those cowards in the military. No one is standing up to "fess up" that they are the one who caused the ordeal - they just pass the buck. What a bunch of losers.
