Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Some pretty good video-- actions of protesters as well as those of police.

It was a good story, and it was a pretty restrained response as well, helped by the fact that the crowd really didn't stand up to the police response, which I credit as well. Rolling trashcans out in front of Strykers was pretty lame though, yeah, that'll stop them.

Olympia for the most part is a pretty mellow town...I feel like I went back in time when I am in that town. I don't think plastic trashcans will slow down a Stryker much.... I was surprised at how much video they did put on the air ! We only got about 30 seconds of that in Seattle.

Last year they slowed them down for several days. However they were doing it on shipments of HumVee's to the troupes in Iraq, so it did not go over so well with alot of people as these were the better reinforced HumVee's.

Some covered part of their face with bandanas. I wonder if that was to protect vs pepper spray (they di leave their eyes uncovered)-- or if it was to avoid being recognized? I have seen cases where militant anarchists do it for that purpose.

I t seems that, even before they arrive, many of them were aware of the fact that they would be subject to pepper spray and prepared themselves (although for all of those wearing bandannas and not goggles-- it turned out that their preparation wasn't totally adequate).

The blockades have gone on for months of equipment to Iraq, so this is not the first of the these that we have had. Looks like some were prepared pretty well, some grabbed what they could. Not everyone has goggles laying around....

Sometimes agent provocateurs (police posing as protesters who go to incite violence to discredit the groups of peaceful protesters by painting them as violent) wear masks to protect their identity as cops, as was the case in Ontario earlier this year.

I'm not too sure, honestly. Certainly it is possible, though of course it is possible that some of the protesters got out of hand (with the trash can incidents) on their own accord. At the very least, I think that it can be assumed that there are spies amongst some of the more organized dissident anti-war groups, a la cointelpro.

I have been looking for information on protesters tactics in preparation for the Republican convention in St Paul next year. I am clipping it to the RNC 2008 Collaboration group. It sounds like we will see similar tactics on a much larger scale.

You're welcome. :-)
Btw, someone who uses the screenname 'Zombie' (he needs to keep his identity secret) takes pictures of demonstrations in the SF Bay area. It may not be helpful in in discovering tactics-- but there is a lot of interesting stuff there. (Mostly still-- a few videos-- after the 'ohamme cartoon emonstrations' he compiled what is probably the best collection of pictures of Mohammed down through the ages-- both secular an devotional)

There's a lot there. (Be sure to scroll down to the section ''Investigative Reports''-- some of these are excellent (while Zombie keeps his real identity secret it is known that he is a lawyer-- I believe he may be a European immigrant?)

I remember being set upon by police and hard hats. These officers were quite tolerant. They did get a bit frustrated and began pushing the crowd. At least as they arrested people they didn't beat them with the clubs all the way to the wagon. It's a start I only hope it grows, but beware of the Chimp and his brigade of silencers. If he sends in the troops to take control you may see another Kent State.

There are times when the police are not so tolerant-- but most of the demonstrations where I've actually been present and seen things myself-- I've been amazed at the patience an tolerance of the cops. Often I've seen demonstrators taunting them--provoking them in an obvious attempt to get the police to attack them-- but the officers resisting these attempts.

The Olympia Cops are very used to college students and seem to be fairly decent at putting up with things. They have Evergreen State College in Olympia and the cops and students seem to get along pretty well, Seems like the head cop (Norwegian guy) is a fairly clear headed person and not to rash at jumping the gun. Life is a bit more mellow in Olympia then Seattle most of the time.

Well I'm afraid I can't help you-- at least for now. I just had a long discussion with Eric Albert-- as a result, my mind has turned to mush (I'm sure its temporary though).

However the interaction did accomplish one thing-- even though will continue to spell America "Amerika''-- he did convince me to stop spelling his name ''Erik''--I have now decided to spell it ''Eric''.

Anyway, if you think you can handle it-- the discussion may be found here: I WantYou to Hate the Jews.

Peaceful protesting is one thing...

But clearly creating a hazardous condition on the roadway, destroying property (someone OWNS those trash cans), and endangering oneself is entirely reckless and irresponsible.

Not to mention that these "supplies" keep our servicemembers ALIVE.
