Iraq war protesters massed at the Port of Olympia's main gate Tuesday night to block military shipments from the port to Fort Lewis. (Video coverage -11/13).
Some pretty good video-- actions of protesters as well as those of police.
It was a good story, and it was a pretty restrained response as well, helped by the fact that the crowd really didn't stand up to the police response, which I credit as well. Rolling trashcans out in front of Strykers was pretty lame though, yeah, that'll stop them.
Olympia for the most part is a pretty mellow town...I feel like I went back in time when I am in that town. I don't think plastic trashcans will slow down a Stryker much.... I was surprised at how much video they did put on the air ! We only got about 30 seconds of that in Seattle.
Yeah its pretty crazy in Olympia. The protestors have been keeping watch for when the shipments arrive and call via a phone chain the other protesters, this has been going on all week.
Tension in Olympia as war protests escalate
Dozens arrested in protests against Iraq war shipments in Olympia
They'll keep going until they can get one of their own hurt to try and get more press coverage.
Tedd--
Thanks for posting those links-- very informative articles.
No problem, I'm checking around for more, it seems fairly quiet at the moment.

Downtown Protest March against Iraq
This one seems to be growing.
Senior skip day. ;)
Political Studies Class, Extra Credit Field Work Assignment.
Extra credit, man did you get over on that one! Glad for the rest of us to have some upside too :~)

Sounds to me like a good place to use cell phone blockers...

It seems like the authorities have not been particularly aggressive in ensuring that there is freedom of movement on the roadways.
Just came across a video covering another demonstration-- this one was at the U.S.- Mexican border: No Border'' Activists Confronted by Border Cops
Great piece, thanks for sharing.
What I wonder about is this-- do they actually think they will be allowed to stop movement of military supplies?
Last year they slowed them down for several days. However they were doing it on shipments of HumVee's to the troupes in Iraq, so it did not go over so well with alot of people as these were the better reinforced HumVee's.
Looking at the clip again, did you notice the glimpse of the counter protesters?
Its a very interesting clip. There are many base people that live in Olympia. Did you catch that one woman that had served ? She was not too happy !
What's with the masked faces? Aren't they citizens? Possibly professional protestors?
Many had death masks on, some had tear gas to avoid the pepper spray

Some covered part of their face with bandanas. I wonder if that was to protect vs pepper spray (they di leave their eyes uncovered)-- or if it was to avoid being recognized? I have seen cases where militant anarchists do it for that purpose.
Olympia is a small town, my guess is some just did not want to be recognized, most to protect against pepper spray as that stuff does not sound so nice.
I noticed a few wearing goggles also to protect against the pepper spray.
I noticed that also, I also noticed a few people getting their eyes cleaned out on the side of the street that had been sprayed.

I t seems that, even before they arrive, many of them were aware of the fact that they would be subject to pepper spray and prepared themselves (although for all of those wearing bandannas and not goggles-- it turned out that their preparation wasn't totally adequate).
The blockades have gone on for months of equipment to Iraq, so this is not the first of the these that we have had. Looks like some were prepared pretty well, some grabbed what they could. Not everyone has goggles laying around....

Sometimes agent provocateurs (police posing as protesters who go to incite violence to discredit the groups of peaceful protesters by painting them as violent) wear masks to protect their identity as cops, as was the case in Ontario earlier this year.

oyou believe that this was the case here?
I'm not too sure, honestly. Certainly it is possible, though of course it is possible that some of the protesters got out of hand (with the trash can incidents) on their own accord. At the very least, I think that it can be assumed that there are spies amongst some of the more organized dissident anti-war groups, a la cointelpro.
Thanks for posting this!
I have been looking for information on protesters tactics in preparation for the Republican convention in St Paul next year. I am clipping it to the RNC 2008 Collaboration group. It sounds like we will see similar tactics on a much larger scale.

You're welcome. :-)
Btw, someone who uses the screenname 'Zombie' (he needs to keep his identity secret) takes pictures of demonstrations in the SF Bay area. It may not be helpful in in discovering tactics-- but there is a lot of interesting stuff there. (Mostly still-- a few videos-- after the 'ohamme cartoon emonstrations' he compiled what is probably the best collection of pictures of Mohammed down through the ages-- both secular an devotional)
There's a lot there. (Be sure to scroll down to the section ''Investigative Reports''-- some of these are excellent (while Zombie keeps his real identity secret it is known that he is a lawyer-- I believe he may be a European immigrant?)
Whoops-- I forgot the link! The site is here: Zombietime
Thanks for linking this. Blogged on it. With Hat Tip to krishna.
Also, did you guys see the pics of the moonbat mommy who dropped her kid on the pavement face first.

That woman needs some help ! Yikes, that was scary. Poor kid, did you see his face ? Ouch...At least kids forget fast.
I remember being set upon by police and hard hats. These officers were quite tolerant. They did get a bit frustrated and began pushing the crowd. At least as they arrested people they didn't beat them with the clubs all the way to the wagon. It's a start I only hope it grows, but beware of the Chimp and his brigade of silencers. If he sends in the troops to take control you may see another Kent State.
These officers were quite tolerant.
There are times when the police are not so tolerant-- but most of the demonstrations where I've actually been present and seen things myself-- I've been amazed at the patience an tolerance of the cops. Often I've seen demonstrators taunting them--provoking them in an obvious attempt to get the police to attack them-- but the officers resisting these attempts.
If he sends in the troops to take control you may see another Kent State.
I wonder-- it seems like so far the local police are able to handle it-- but I suppose the situation could change.
The Olympia Cops are very used to college students and seem to be fairly decent at putting up with things. They have Evergreen State College in Olympia and the cops and students seem to get along pretty well, Seems like the head cop (Norwegian guy) is a fairly clear headed person and not to rash at jumping the gun. Life is a bit more mellow in Olympia then Seattle most of the time.

No pun intended . . .
Me ? nah never :-)
Speaking of things that are jumpable, as it were: Actually, one of those female demonstrators was really hot. It made me think of jumping . . . oh, never mind....
Clearly I missed that one ! Most demonstrators that I have seen are very plain and very "granola"
Collection of photos from the event
You've posted some really great links here-- have you thought of seeding a few of them?
I should have, but my brain is at about 10% this weekend with one of my nasty sinus infections. So I am on "manual operation mode" Good idea, I need someone to think for me as I sure cannot at the moment.
I use that site often for reference photos as they have great quality photo's, some of the better ones that I have seen.

Well I'm afraid I can't help you-- at least for now. I just had a long discussion with Eric Albert-- as a result, my mind has turned to mush (I'm sure its temporary though).
However the interaction did accomplish one thing-- even though will continue to spell America "Amerika''-- he did convince me to stop spelling his name ''Erik''--I have now decided to spell it ''Eric''.
Anyway, if you think you can handle it-- the discussion may be found here: I WantYou to Hate the Jews.
A fun discussion-- a good time was had by all!
I might take a peek. To handle Eric, I have to have most of my brain and humor working at a pretty decent level :-) Yeah I gave up on calling him Erik also, it reminded me to much of the guy from Blackwater....
Someone should try that microwave beam on those people. They're trying a Pelosi stunt . . . supporting the troops.
Q: How many "progressive" protesters does it take to stop military supplies from reaching the troops?
A: How dare you question their patriotism!
Peaceful protesting is one thing...
But clearly creating a hazardous condition on the roadway, destroying property (someone OWNS those trash cans), and endangering oneself is entirely reckless and irresponsible.
Not to mention that these "supplies" keep our servicemembers ALIVE.
Precisely.
