Black delegates under pressure to switch to Obama

advertisement

''With the Democratic race extremely tight, the party's superdelegates -- the 800 or so unpledged elected officials and party members -- are facing growing racial pressure, and even threats, to back Sen. Barack Obama.

'' Cleveland City Councilman Kevin Conwell, a onetime supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, is switching sides to the Obama camp.

It had little to do with Clinton and everything to do with pressure from people who voted him into office.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

'' "With all due respect to my colleagues, whoever you are, I firmly believe if you don't have loyalty and integrity, what do you have? ... I am a woman of my word. I will not leave her," said Ohio Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

Neither will California Rep. Diane Watson, though she said she's received not only pressure, but also threatening e-mails.

"We can disagree. But I don't think that's a cause for viciousness and for launching a campaign against me," Watson said.

The threats I don't like and obviously Obama doesn't condone... but what does voters telling their elected officials they will vote them out unless they vote for Obama say except democracy in action? I can tell Steve Chabot I'll run against him next time he's up for election if I don't like his tie.

A recent NPR story revealed John Lewis was subjected to a nasty robo call campaign designed to make him change his support. Apparently, it worked.

I have a feeling that if a state voted for hillary and their super delegate was looking at obama he would get politely influenced as well.
And if the gop had them, they would get preasured as well.
I have trouble seeing where color has a place in this???
This is trash lazy journalism at it's best.

I agree-- t would be nice if people-- and politicians-- were colour-blind. And ignored gender-- and seual orietation- etc.

But the reality is-- they still don't.

I hope someday that Dr King's dream becomes a reality. I hope its sooner rather than later....

So this is what the Democratic party really thinks of democracy?

They haven't even defined what a "threat" in this context is. Are they threatening violence? Well, that's not okay. Are they threatening to run against them or fund an opponent the next time the superdelegate is up for re-election? That sounds like democracy to me. Not to mention the Republicans threaten the superdelegates every single year in the latter way.

That sounds like threatened physical violence to me, although it's not explicitly expressed here.

I'm not sure that I follow. The Republicans don't have superdelegates at their convention.

Well, by that I mean that Republicans spend money against and run against these superdelegates every election they run in. It's really just intra-party democracy going on here. The Democrats are deciding through a contest who will play their part in the next election.

Well, by that I mean that Republicans spend money against and run against these superdelegates every election they run in.

That's not threatening Democrats, that's democracy in action. Threatening people with violence or a form of ostracism for having a dissenting opinion is something altogether different.

I have yet to hear any reports of threats of violence. I believe that was insinuated into the situation by the repeated calls of these incidents "threats." Are people not allowed to vote or contribute money to whatever political candidate they want for any reason now? Not allowed to stand for office for any reason? I mean, seriously, they aren't doing anything that hasn't been done the last two millenia. Besides, the only way people will bail on Clinton at this point is if they believe she won't win because the party establishment can protect their chosen Congressional candidates from primary challengers with their money and they would do just that for people that stuck by Clinton if she becomes president. All these people switching are afraid that Obama will win and the people "threatening" them will be able to stand up a viable candidate against them and win or make the primary pretty damned difficult.

Actually-- ''threats' are commoplace in politics-- in fact-- ''it comes with the territory''. Some are epressed openly-- some never stated-- but both individuals involved know what the score is [to coin a phrase].

        There's a saying in politics..''to get along...go along''].

The htreat is almost always the same.

In Congress it often takes this form-- ''If you don't support me on this issue-- I won't support you when you need my vote''. Sometimes its openly stated-- sometimes there's no need to. Its the way the system wors-- some would say its human nature. It could be considered to be ''a threat''.

[Btw-- if you've ever wondered how come U.n. votes are always so one-sided against Israel-- it s because of this sort of threat from the Arab bloc-- in fact from the entire Islamic bloc. Its also why there are so may bashi Israel-- but hardly ay codemi the Sudan for Darfur...China..etc-- its almost always Israel.].

Another example of a threat-- ''If you don't vote for the bill my group supports-- come election time you won't get a cent in campain contributions from us'' [There are some people whose job it is to constantly make these ''threats''...they are called ''lobbyists'' ;]

I think that-- for the most part-- ifyou want someone to change-- you have 2 choices-- stick or carrot-- so to speak [or use both].. Some sticks are bigger than others-- and some carrots are sweeter than others.
