Fury as Zimbabwe sanctions vetoed

advertisement

"Britain and the US have condemned Russia and China for vetoing a draft UN Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe's leaders. The measures had included an arms embargo and a travel ban for Robert Mugabe and 13 of his key allies.

"Zimbabwe's UN ambassador said the UK and US had come up with flimsy reasons. Boniface Chidyausiku said he was happy to see what he called the machinations of the two failing.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The opposition's Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change party say they had faced a campaign of violence by Mugabe supporters, which left dozens dead and thousands injured and forced from their homes.

Russia and China said they opposed the resolution because the situation in Zimbabwe did not threaten international stability.

Its the old "Iraq argument" (the world should ignore Saddam-- because he's "only" committing atrocities 'against his own people').

Member states of the African Union did not endorse these sanctions, either.

    That's curious-- why?

Refusal to step in line with their colonial masters; an inability for other despots to condemn a member of their fraternity.

Whose colonial masters? Are there still colonies in Africa? That era is long gone. Seems like a strange reason to refuse to take action to end human suffering...?

A cowardly and dishonest reason as well.

    Thank you for this seed.

    You're welcome :).
It never ceases to amaze me how some people will come to the defense of the world's most brutal tyrants. A lot of these folks are, I think, motivated primarily by hatred of the U.S.-- so for some reason they feel that any regime that is not close to the U.S., no mater how brutal, must be defended.

Russia and China are somehow always on the 'perceived' wrong side. N.Korea, Iran and now Zimbabwe.

Keeping only Zimbabwe in mind, it is pretty obvious that the situation there is bad. What do they have in support of Mugabe except lame arguments?

And..in addition..China is arming the brutal Arab regime in the Sudan that is massacring the blacks in Darfur. And-- also the tyrants in control of Myanmar (Burma). And let's not forget what they are doing in Tibet....and to the Falun Gong and others in their own country. Yes-- that's how they are preceived-- and in this case the perception is accurate.

No one here is defending Mugabe's regime. The hyperinflation and attendant woes are causing massive human suffering. But it's clear that the West is singling out this leader for condemnation over similar despots all over the same continent. China and Russia are refusing to play ball. That's hardly even news anymore.

I think we should mind our own business for a few decades and get our own matters under control at home before we worry about what other governments are doing. Hell maybe we should sanction ourselves for awhile we have some of the biggest war criminals running our country. we just want everyone to believe it is ok under the false flag of democracy.

This lack of concern some people have for other human beings always surprises me. (Especially coming from well fed Americans.

Could it possibly be a racial thing...?

in much of the third world and Africa in point of fact violence will prevail

to try to stop (it is a racial condemnation of others values)

I definitely think it is about race and a feeling of superiority.
