"Socotra Island: you have to see it to believe it

We covered some other wordly places before but this island simply blows away any notion about what is considered "normal" for a landscape on Earth.

Cool Island. My wife is a fanatical Orchid grower, more species then I can count, many she collects from the jungle. This other plant which I saw a photo of on the Socotra Island, she also is getting crazy about. she's got 25 or so of different ages and sizes. I call them the Fat boy plant, I know, not very scientific of me. She cultivates the bottoms to be fat and different shapes. Neat stuff.

A lot of the plants on Socotra are unique to that island (not sure about the "Fatboy Plant' though...I wonder if its the same one?)

I think so. The other trees looked pretty far out, never saw them before. The fat boy, has different varieties with different colored flowers, but the plant looks the same.

Here, I looked it up(boy I'm lazy like that sometimes) We've had these plants for awhile.

adenium thai socotranum, Thais working in Saudi Arabia took some home, now they are cultivated all over Thailand. wow, cool.

That's fascinating!

I was wondering if they were indigenous to thailand-- I had thought they weren't-- or maybe were a similar looking but different species. Interesting that they were introduced...

What are they used for in Tahiland

the linked article gives the impression that they are only used for decorative purposes...?

Yes, decorative. People believe they are good luck around here as well. Thailand has a few introduced trees. Rubber trees, and eucalyptus, I know off hand. Socotranum.... My wife is an addict along with orchids.

Yeah-- when you mentioned Eucalyptus I was thinking they probably weren't indigenous to Thailand. Makes me think of Australia-- and Koalas! (I wonder-- will the Thais import Koalas? other than being cute-- do they serve any useful purposes?)

I the koalas could combat the evil monkey problem.... I'm all for it. I used to like monkeys, now I have definite opinions on their nature and intent. Beware, they are smarter then your average bear.

No, I never heard of it before either

I have... I have actually been there. It is a beautiful island. It's too bad its located in such a dangerous area between Somalia and Yemen and surrounded by somali pirates. Actually, I found Yemen to be quite beautiful as well and chock full of serious history. If it wasn't so dangerous it would have great tourism possibilities. Maybe one day...

How cool, K. You're like a mind-reader. I stumbled across some articles about this island a very short while ago and have been reading about it with interest. Sounds like it'd be a very neat place to visit. I would love to go there someday.

Finding lists of unusual places is not my main interest :-)

However, I just came across another list of fascinating places. Unfortunately, you can't visit any of these-- but there is some really fascinating information in the article:

Top 10 Places You Can't Go:

"The world is full of secret and exclusive places that we either don't know about, or simply couldn't visit if we wanted to. This list takes a look at ten of the most significant places around the world that are closed to the general public or are virtually impossible for the general public to visit.

You wouldn't have to go to Yemen. Just contact the Somalians for transport; they are even closer :-)
