Fort Hood Massacre: "Eyes wide shut"

advertisement

"US intelligence agencies reportedly knew for months that the Army psychiatrist had tried to make contact with people linked to al Qaeda. So why was Hasan allowed to stay in the service?

"The Senate Homeland Security Committee, which he chairs, wants to get to the bottom of what he rightly says looks to be "the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11."

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Classmates in a medical program say they repeatedly heard Hasan make anti-American statements and justify suicide bombers. One doctor who studied with Hasan said he "would frequently say he was a Muslim first and an American second." He and others reportedly complained, apparently to no avail.

"We questioned how somebody could take an oath of office and be an officer in the military and swear . . . to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic," with that attitude, he said.

"As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty, as well," said Gen. George Casey, the Army chief of staff, because "a diverse army gives us strength."

Maybe so -- but to what end, if the Army ignores an unstable extremist who allied himself with America's enemies?

More of this is surfacing. It makes me wonder how much the intelligience agencies knew of this and when.

And what the reason was for the lack of action that might have prevented the tragedy. Political correctness-- or merely incompetance?

This will be the most investigated murder since Kennedy was killed. I think they had signs, strong ones, but because he is Arabic and Muslim they moved slowly to avoid a charge of profiling based on ethnicity.

But I wonder of there will be a cover-up? If it turns out the reason they didn't act was political correctness-- which of course resulted in the loss of several lives-- they may try to cover that up.

I think they had signs, strong ones, but because he is Arabic and Muslim they moved slowly to avoid a charge of profiling based on ethnicity.

As a result of them moving slowly, several lives were lost. I would imagine that the families of the victims may sue (if they can?). By moving slowly, they are complicit in the loss of life...

I just hope the full truth comes out. If there was PC delay in investigating people should be held fully responsible. It could take yuears.

Yesterday Obama said he will have a full investigation and hold people responsible for any coverups.

I believe in the past he also said he would close Gitmo, and would increase troops levels in Afghanistan...
