SNL Parody of Obama & Jintao Press Conference in Beijing

advertisement

This is a satire.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

lol if you're trying to bring up the Administrations battles with FOX. It's a total non-comparison:

1) FOX was not "censored" in the first place. Merely not inviting FOX to press conferences is not censoring, since press conferences are for news reporters. Is it censorship that paparazzi aren't invited to White House press conferences?

2) FOX News was claiming to be a real news channel. How can this be so, when the federal court allows them to make up false claims?

3) What makes SNL funny is their brilliant satires and hilarious sketches. What makes FOX funny is the stupidity of their talking heads.

One well known example. Ap sicked fact checkers to Plalin's book, AP assigned no one to fact check Obama's dream of my fathers. Even we serious questions were raised about the true author of the book.

CBS Dan Rather runs with completely bogus story on Bush. Gets caught not by his peers or AP fact checking but bloggers, squealed like a stuck pig. Never did own up to it, and even tried to sue CBS of the deal.

That is just off the top of head.

krishna---this most excellent skit was right up there with the Obama "check list" one. I hope SNL keeps it up. Obama might actually learn something about how he is playing round the world---you know to everyone outside his inner circle and beyond his his own big ears. You think given that his ears are SO big that he might actually listen to the American people who are telling him in no uncertain terms that his labor/left govt expanding/job killing deficit exploding policies thus far stink. BIG TIME.

800 lb---yes, it would. I feel strongly though that obama's statist, labor/left policies are job killers. We'll see if he can turn things around with the folks who do the hiring in this country. Those folks are scared out of their wits of massive obama programs like obamacare, cap and trade etc that will make it harder for small business to survive let alone hire more employees. A job summit ain't going to create jobs. Only policy changes will spur job creation in this country and I won't hold my breath waiting for this President to do what is necessary for that to occur. And come on--the ears are funny. Even he makes fun of them.

800 lb. gorilla

as far as jobs go, the number of job losses is slowing considerably and may soon start to see a net gain.

Or they could begin falling off the cliff. There's a good case to be made for a "sugar high" caused by the Fed injecting liquidity into the system and the short-lived boosts from the stimulus and C.A.R.S.

Keep in mind though that the credit bubble that drove the economy through the 1980s and 1990s is still in the process of deflating, and there's not one damned thing the feds can do about that. That's the 800 lb. gorilla in the middle of the living room, so to speak :-)

Comrade Anita

I've been enjoying my new, Party-approved re-educational tool, The People's Cube for several months now. With a few days of practice I was able to achieve the same success as Commissar Hillary Clinton!

I never imagined anyone could improve upon the Cube, but it seems though that our Party comrades in Poland have done exactly that. I have a Polish cube on order ... hopefully the learning curve is not too steep for this lowly member of the proletariat.

Good news also for us gambling comrades. To attract more of our anti-capitalist business, our local Indian casino now offers craps tables with The People's Dice of Equality.

What a pathetic attempt at a personal attack by generalizing me to fit into your stereotype after decrying being stereotyped yourself. Cry me a @!$%#ing river, just don't drown in your hypocrisy.

When you made your wild assed guess insulting my integrity, you obviously didn't check my post history where just that same day I publically apologized to another viner for posting a fact I didn't properly source.

I never hold you nor anyone to the standards I hold myself to. Frankly, you'd fall short.

However, I'd expect you'd have the self-respect and the integrity to hold yourself to a standard that if you make a claim, you back it up.

"AP sicced fact checkers' Give me a @!$%#ing break. Facts don't have a bias. They're either right, or wrong. Do you have any substantial argument countermanding any of the AP s claims against her book? Or did it just rub you a bit raw ? You want to fact check Obama's book, be my guest.

"Dan Rather..." he was FIRED for what he did. What, did you want him to go to jail ? What more punishment would you want seen ? The result will ALWAYS be that when it comes down between the larger entity and the individual, the individual will ALWAYS take the fall. Rather's thing was a plea-deal from the get-go.

Don't ever question my integrity again, especially with some petty partisan bull@!$%# like that.

Okay I give you the benefit of the doubt that always have researched at the ready sources for your comments. So what! Your opening comment inferred that I do not, and was poorly veiled attempt to discredit my comment offhandedly.

If one is writing an article, yes you should be held to a high level of accountability, but when you make a comment you should not. It is a comment, opinion, I do not just drool out claims which I have no knowledge. Common sense and accumulated knowledge in my book are sufficient for comments.

If I lashed out strongly you hit a pat peeve of mine. When someone takes the position my comment is invalid unless I have a rock solid court document to back it up.

The double standard is blatant. Before Palin's book hit the shelf the major media was trying to tear it to shreds. No the major media never once even acknowledged or tried to remotely question anything written or stated by Obama. I am being critical of the left wing media machine.

For the record I am not a huge supporter of Palin, I like her Grit though.

The point is the mainstream media cannot call itself true journalism unless it treats both sides the same and they just don't. However, Liberals insist they do. Yes I am generalizing Liberals. If that suit fits you fine wear it with pride.

Side note don't berate me, your general tone was questioning my integrity from the beginning, get self righteous all you want, don't push if you don't want to be pushed back. I Sir, fit no ones stereotype, but so far you fit the bill of a liberal with every tactic you have just pulled.

I gave you examples, and you still try poo poo them away. By your own statement you owe an me apology, you didn't you just twisted off, once again showing your true colors.

It isn't satire unless there is a semblence to the truth, which it is not. They had the "parody" of Obama say he had created "0" jobs, when in truth, he has created approximately 650,000 jobs, by all estimates. They realize that there are a few typo's in the webpage concerning what districts got the money/jobs, but they also realize that a lot of districts did not add in the number of jobs saved, only adding in those created.

Besides, one quick look at this job loss graph proves that we were in a free fall until Obama and the stimulus package arrived. We were losing more and more jobs each month during Bush, then the job losses started to immediately get smaller by the month.

http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?data_tool=latest_numbers&series_id=CES0000000001&output_view=net_1mth

The moment they had the actor cite the number "0", the skit lost all humor to me. It no longer was satire, having entered the realm of misinformation and GOP propaganda.

They had the "parody" of Obama say he had created "0" jobs, when in truth, he has created approximately 650,000 jobs, by all estimates.

This number is so bloated that it's not even funny! A single $1000 lawnmower purchase supposedly creaded 500 jobs in Arkansas. Half of the 650,000 jobs are education based and many school districts state that they might not have actually laid off teachers without the stimulus money.

posts that contain statements such as "you libs....blah, blah, blah" or "all of you libs..." are patently false. it is impossible to tell the mind of every single member of a particular group. many liberals watch snl and found this sketch to be freaking hilarious. i am often categorized as a liberal here and i was laughing out loud, and i am in no way offended. wholesale bashing of a group or philosophy should stop because the statements rarely can be seen as the truth.

indeed, you could insert the word conservatives or righties and the statements would be patently false. that is correct. i do not criticize left posters as much as right posters due to the fact that i tend to stick with certain topics as my own biases allow. however, i do blast posters from both sides of the fence from time to time. the arguments, that one makes when making wholesale accustions of a group (whether it be political party, race, color, or creed), are doomed.

So, now that YOU think SNL is a right-wing propoganda machine, what makes it ok that they were, up until now, a left-wing propoganda machine?

Obviously, you know nothing of the definition of propaganda. ANY propaganda is bad, but satire is good. But if it has to have a semblance of truth. Right wing or left wing, if it is based on truth, it's funny. If it is based on a lie, then it is a desperate attempt at making something funny that isn't. Plus... I never said SNL was a right-wing propaganda machine, now did I, Einstein? Merely that the SKIT left all satire behind with misinformation making it, the SKIT (Einstein) was right-wing propaganda at best.

Did you bother to watch the rest of the show, or did you feel so dirty watching Barry get it where the sun don't shine that you turned off the TV in disgust? Because if you had continued to watch, they also a couple of skits right afterward about Sarah Palin, and one more (can't remember)...

Yes, I did watch the rest of the show, enjoying much of the rest. Being that the rest was based on some semblance of truth, it wasn't that bad. Satisfied?

You libs are like little children. You are all fat and happy when things are going your way, but you get a little tit for tat and y'all run crying to your mommies.

Tit for tat? Like I said, it isn't "tit for tat" when the right-wing just makes things up to complain about or satirize, and the left-wing uses actual parrallels in real life.

and as far as this:

Tell that myth to the 500,000+ people who sign up for new unemployment benefits each month.

refer to:

http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?data_tool=latest_numbers&series_id=CES0000000001&output_view=net_1mth

and see how even a simpleton can watch and see the plummetting employment numbers reverse to less and less jobs lost. Truth hurts?

But the funniest response is this, because I guarantee he can find NO evidence to back this craziness up.

This number is so bloated that it's not even funny! A single $1000 lawnmower purchase supposedly creaded 500 jobs in Arkansas. Half of the 650,000 jobs are education based and many school districts state that they might not have actually laid off teachers without the stimulus money.

I don't have to find evidence to back this up. It was printed in the NY Times...and all of you liberals know that if the NY Times reports something, it has to be true! In addition to what I stated in #2.4, the article also claims that the Head Start program simply used the stimulus money for raises and their claim of 8000 jobs is under review.

Hey, JR Einstein? I can read a graph, and a chart, too. Did you notice that the numbers really start tanking when people realized he had a chance for the nomination against Hillary? That's when business owners like me saw all this coming and started battoning down the hatches. When he clinched in the summer, the numbers start their BIG nose-dive, and they continued to do so, despite Omnibus, Stimulus, Cash for Clunkers, Making Homes Affordable, Moratorium on Foreclosures and Tarp.

Do you have any actual insight into the numbers, or do you just want to put something out there and blame Bush? lol... you guys are really making fools of yourself with all of this.

Sounds like you and Obama both have trouble owning your shortcomings. Not exactly the kind of character flaw we're looking for in a leader.

so you are blaming obama for tanking the economy before he was president? did you notice that after obama was, actually, president for a few months that the job losses really started to slow down?

No.... I'm telling you how conservative businesses owners reacted as the writing became clear on the wall. I am part of that world, and in my community, that is what people who plan for the future do. We knew, because Obama told us, that he was going to make us pay, so we started getting rid of the dead weight in anticipation of another downturn and in an attempt try to get in front of it. Some people know this practice as "running a business for a profit." The numbers clearly reflect it.

I noticed that the "slow down" is nominal, and that no jobs are being created. You mean that kind of slow down? Or the kind of slow-down in the chart that is actually in offered in Preliminary numbers for the last two months?

may was down to 303,000 jobs lost. june was worse with 463,000, but july and august were better again (303,000 and 154,000 jobs lost respectively). these are not preliminary figures and show that for six months the job losses have been slowed down. do more jobs need to be created? yes, but the fact remains that the job losses have slowed down considerably.

also, your comment definitely does imply that the economy tanked when obama was nominated and therefore, you indirectly blame someone who was not even the president yet. it is fine if you wish to do so, but it does not make it a fact.

As for your cherry pick of the 303,000 and 154,000, I was hoping you would go there. Any numbers after 154,000 is attributed mainly to seasonal SUMMER JOBS. Numbers for ALL THE FOLLOWING MONTHS are preliminary and marked so on the chart. In other words, THEY ARE NOT REAL.

cherry pick? how is listing every month except for the first two that you mentioned, cherry picking? cherry picking would be selecting a few. i gave every single month. do you know what cherry picking is? also, the preliminary numbers should not be off by several hundred thousand, so they will also be lower. today, they also came out with the new claims for unemployment and they were lower than expected after being adjusted for seasonal work. how do you explain that? it seems to me that you are the one doing the cherry picking. i merely said that it could be possible that things are improving, and i will stand by that because, hey, things could be improving. they may not be, but that would not make me wrong.

perhaps as many times as people like you act with total irreverance towards a president, not for his work, which turned around free-falling job losses each month under Bush, to less and less job losses under the Stimulus, but for his physical characteristics like his big ears.

The allusion to the big eared elephant was rather infantile by the way.

    anita

    for me:

i received a tax break for myself as did my wife. we now bring home more money.

my wife and i received an $8,000 tax rebate from our purchase of a new home.

several of my friends and family members benefited from the recent c.a.r.s. program.

    for our community:

our county received $4,000,000 in stimulus funding for our schools. in our small, rural county this money has gone a long way.

our county received several millions of dollars for roadway improvements, which have helped to pave some county highways that were in disrepair for quite some time.

    for our nation:

obama has helped to open up a dialogue with many nations with which we had poor relations in the past. for this, and his sentiment towards a global community and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, obama was awarded the nobel peace prize.

as commander-in-chief, obama gave the go ahead to our troops to rescue american sailors taken hostage by somali pirates.

he sent bill clinton to north korea to help in obtaining the release of two u.s. journalists.

this is a very quick list off of the top of my head. i would say that some work has been done. in ten months it is not too bad, and there is a lot more that has been done. this is not a comprehensive list by any stretch of the imagination. comments like yours cause one to lose credibility.

The sad Truth is you have been fooled.

Biggest example you said you got a 8,000 tax credit. Well you did and you didn't. When the government announced the tax credit for new home purchases the retail markets reacted just as expected. People bought new homes in droves, however as usual when the government interferes with free markets the law on intended consequences kicks in.

What you perceived as a tax credit was actually got wrapped in the price of the home and you financed it over 30 years. House prices were adjusting down from the inflated levels caused during the government mortgage pushing scam which lead to the first collaspe.

The housing market had not corrected yet. After the home buyer credit was in effect we saw a buyers market turn back into a sellers market. The prices quit dipping, buyers and bankers took their fair share of the 8,000 in closing cost and price of the homes.

So instead of first time home buyer credit, it should have been named banker bailout #2. It stopped many foreclosures, which is not all bad, but it would have been better long term to leave the market alone.

I know it adversely affected me. I was in a position and willing to upgrade from my town home to a larger 4 bedroom, with my kids getting older, and most likely going to be living with through college we need a bigger place.

The market was over inflated, the prices were dropping where it would have made sense for me to buy a larger home, however the tax credit program perverted the behaviors in the market to the extent that i was unwilling to pay the stabilized price, when the program runs it course that same home will cost 10K less than it does today.

I could go a vent about the cash for clunkers program as well.

In the end we the taxpayers foot the bill when government spends either directly or indirectly (i.e. tax credits) The government does not make money to spend it can only take and redistribute our money someplace else.

All this president knows how to do is rob Peter to pay Paul, and that's "work" honest Americans don't need. Obama demonstrates continually that he's keeping at least one campaign promise: the one he made to Joe the Plumber.

i said that he had done work and he has. not everyone will agree with what has been accomplished, but to those who say that obama has not done anything, i say false. your argument is a different one. it is much more complex than the simple argument of obama doing something vs. nothing. he did say he would redistribute wealth. there was never any doubt about it. there is a certain portion of the people that find the story of robin hood to be quite romantic. i believe, in part, that is the reason why barack obama is the president of the united states.

The sad Truth is you have been fooled.

That's right.... but it's the right-wing that have been played as fools all along, not the left. Bush said his tax breaks would save the economy, then we had a recession in '02. Bush said it would stimulate the economy, but all it did was sit in the richest of the rich bank accounts... it didn't help the average republican one iota. Republican ideology caused de-regulation, massive bubbles in the market, and crashed the entire world's economic system, but you claim who has been fooled? Bush claims we need a bail out for the banks, then gives them the money as fast as he can without any restrictions to help start business, save people from foreclosures, or anything else. He didn't even write down who got what money... and you say Obama is fooling us?

I reserve for myself the right to choose how my own wealth is spread, and I do a far more efficient job of spreading than a federal bureaucracy ever could.

Yeah.. that's why before Social Security, millions fell through the cracks and died of starvation, cold, heat, right? You think we should go back to the way it was? Or how about before Medicare when millions fell through the cracks of not having health care to die for simple diseases with simple and manageable cures or therapies? Do you think you can be more efficient than Medicare too?

Please say yes, and prove how stupid you are.

The funniest part is this: you probably aren't even a person who benefitted from the Bush tax cuts. Odds are that you're not, because they really only helped the top 10% wage earners. Everyone else had an increase in taxes, especially if you're talking about Reagan, who lowered taxes on the rich, then had the most massive payroll tax increase in history. With both Bush and Reagan, the massive decrease in taxes meant less money to go to the states in the form of "block grants", which led to the states having less money to pay for police, firemen, teachers, regulation enforcement, roads, bridges, highways, and court systems, but they still had to pay for these things, so they raised your property tax, your school tax, your sales tax and state tax to do so - resulting in..... higher tax burdens for the middle class under Bush and Reagan.

But go ahead, keep voting against your own best interests. They'll just keep making fools out of you, making you think you're getting a tax break when you actually end up paying more.

What I and millions of over conservatives are concerned about is the disconnect between who uses his credit card (Obama) and who pays the bills (you, me, and all other taxpayers). He doesn't give a damn how much he spends because he's not responsible for paying for it. As a result we now have the largest budget deficit in the nation's history.

#1, the government can at best pump up liquidity to give the economy a sugar high like what we've had over the past half year or so. There's no read food here, the kind that the economy can produce. #2, we're going into chaos anyway; the feds just want to make it look like they're doing something for the people so they can get re-elected.

for many, the reality is chaos right now, so a little help for the people might not be a bad thing

I agree, as long as the help comes from fellow Americans. I donate to charities that assist people in need of food and shelter. Reliance upon the federal government for one's livelihood is a slippery slope leading to national fiscal disaster.

Given their track record so far, the smart money says it's not going to happen. When more "too big to fail" companies hit the skids Congress will be right there throwing more good money after bad as they've been doing for over a year now.

The best I could imagine is that next year's deficit will be lower than this year's, which still implies a rising cumulative debt. Even that's a stretch though.

Bush goes AWOL and, yet again, another American must take the shots:

America's indebtedness to China is staggeringly high, although the Bush administration - which needs foreign loans to help finance the budget deficit - seems unfazed. But there is reason for pause. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that China's holdings of foreign currency and securities would soon top $1 trillion, a fivefold increase since 2000.

A mention of Bush in this context is not only acceptable, but truthful. After all, it was Bush who ignored the coming recession, except for a mere $400-600 check he sent out to the nation in Mar, 'O8 (proving he knew the recession was hitting already way back then, and still did nothing to stimulate the infrastructure), and it was Bush who caused the massive job losses that started months and months before Obama, indeed, even before the election.

It's also fitting to mention that the GOP told no one of the recession, which began in Fall of '07, continuing to say over and over again during the election that the economy was "sound".

This is precisely why this skit wasn't "satire", but more of a cheap shot to Obama, via misinformation.

It isn't funny if they can't have a semblance to the truth, and the truth is, Obama has created and saved more jobs than Bush created in his whole two terms. In fact, Bush lost all jobs he could have ever claimed having made during his whole time in office in the last year of his presidency. Bush was the true "Zero-jobs-created-president", and he was in for 8 years!

This was the funniest Obama skit SNL has done to date. Usually they fall really flat - as in not funny because they weren't funny or even clever. As a long time SNL fan and an Obama supporter, I'm always up for a good laugh. Over the past few years, nothing, imo, will top Tina Fey's Palin. Close second might be Amy Poehler's Hillary.

It isn't funny or clever if they can't be truthful.

Saying "0" jobs created took all the humor out of it. It would be like making fun of Palin for privatizing Alaska after handing out huge amounts of oil money to the citizens by saying she didn't give them anything. It would be like making fun of Bush for claiming to have helped fight AIDS by saying he didn't do anything in Africa.

I hope you people have some common sense. Otherwise, you'd laugh at anything that derides anyone, regardless of the facts, just because you're biased.

John Stewart is creditied, mainly by the left, for bringing important issues up on the Daily Show.

SNL cut through the political correct haze when they pointed out (a few times) how Obama was being treated with kid gloves compared to Hillary during the campaigns.

Maybe, just maybe, the "Mainstream Media" will try to look at Obama objectively.

So what you're saying is that you aren't looking for any satire ( Satire ... the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.)...

You'd rather pick on people for vices that are just made up? Or was it just the "potty humor" of it all you liked with the sexual innuendo?

In January 2001, The Onion wrote an article titled “Bush: Our Long National Nightmare of Peace and Prosperity Is Over."

WASHINGTON, DC – Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."

"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.

On the economic side, Bush vowed to bring back economic stagnation by implementing substantial tax cuts, which would lead to a recession, which would necessitate a tax hike, which would lead to a drop in consumer spending, which would lead to layoffs, which would deepen the recession even further.

Bush concluded his speech on a note of healing and redemption.

"We as a people must stand united, banding together to tear this nation in two," Bush said. "Much work lies ahead of us: The gap between the rich and the poor may be wide, be there's much more widening left to do. We must squander our nation's hard-won budget surplus on tax breaks for the wealthiest 15 percent. And, on the foreign front, we must find an enemy and defeat it."

So if they Chinese are "bending over" for us... to what avail? They are getting huge amounts of interest. They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't think it would work. Or they would never get back their money.

For what reason would they allow us to "screw" them over?

And btw... how does this equate to our becoming the new "cheap manufacturers" who will produce lead poisoned toys, etc? Only if the GOP has their way and de-regulates is that possible. The Chinese are learning a lesson of market capitalism by seeing thier sales wane when they find lazy comrades-in-charge producing poor quality goods. They, also, had children affected by these toys and dogs affected by their dog food. To think that the lesson actually goes the opposite way is just silly.

Sorry, but that joke made no sense either. It was just "potty" humor for the intellectually challenged.

Except that those things are actually true.

        Just do it somewhere else..............

What? You afraid of any intellectual truth? Or just believe in censorship? Go ahead and censor lies, if you'd like. I'll even help you. But don't censor truth unless you're a dictator, proving how "american" you are. Like I said, those other things ARE true.

The NOT-American Rupert Murdoch has admitted that he tried to "influence" Americans into supporting the Iraq war, which turned out to be based on lies. He even agreed with Glenn Beck to say that Obama was racist, proving where his bias is.

And Rush Limbaugh IS a big fat drug addict... indicted for "doctor shopping" ... he was even caught with illegal drugs coming back from the Dominican Republic (a bunch of non-prescribed Viagra from an island notorious for it's kiddie prostitution).

And Sarah Palin IS dumb, not even able to mention what she reads until a whole year later (if she really reads is another question). She even fights against a made-up issue about "death panels" when she herself proposed the same "death panels" (end-of-life counseling) in her own state a year before the election! How can that be anything other than dumb? And wow... she left her mayorship with the town going from a balanced budget to one that was 22 million dollars in the hole! Then quits her governorship half-way through... well, I guess that proves more of the point of her supporters being stupid, but anyway.

Keep defending your issues this way; you're helping me make my point. Thank you!

But meanwhile, Obama took a plummetting employment statistic created by the GOP and turned it around, as you can see from this Department of Labor graph:

        http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?data_tool=latest_numbers&series_id=CES0000000001&output_view=net_1mth

SO ... it is quite different, as you can see... because there is actually TRUTH to that stuff, but none to the Obama making "0" jobs.

One SNL skit about the Bama and it sends a few of his sheeple over the edge....

Pointing out the truth is not going over the edge... but making an argument that is void of substance, and simply derogatory of another is. Where are your facts to defend this satire which has no ironic truth to it? You have none, so you go "over the edge" to attack the messenger rather than just admit, yeah... it was rather stupid... because you enjoyed it out of a sick sense of bias rather than it actually being any true parody.

        As they say... "case closed".

No kidding! Thanks for making a great point! So as you MUST agree, it made NO sense for the chinese to complain about being reamed when we are the ones about to be reamed! I've complained since Bush started his huge tax cuts for the rich, which were never paid for unless you count borrowing money from China to pay for the huge tax cuts, as a matter of national security. Did the GOP (or you) say anything then?

So the skit was, again, not true to the actual events. We are the ones that are potentially getting reamed, not the Chinese. And all because Bush wanted to give HUGE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to the rich, by borrowing money that our middle-class workers will be paying the interest for (for generations to come)!

At least when Obama did so, it was an emergency (created by the Bush Recession).

When Bush did so, it was just to make the middle class pay for the trillions that the nation's elitists stashed away in their bank accounts.

Thanks for making my point! (though I doubt you saw that coming).

while several of the points you have made about the sketch being wrong are true, i still find the sketch funny. it is possible that many americans do not realize that we are deeply in debt to china, so for that snl should score some points. the impressions were not all that horrible and the sophmoric parts involving the sexual innuendo are funny. that being said, yes, they were many extreme exaggerations in the sketch that were far from the truth or outright lies. however, i will give snl poetic license as it is a comedy show. it is a sad commentary that some from the right would believe that this sketch is actually quite accurate.

most of the debt was accumulated because we could not afford to pay for our wars. sometimes, being the policeman of the world has some very high costs (loss of life, money, detrimental effects on the homeland). these are things that should be considered before sending troops to any foreign country.

palin appeals to the most conservative. however, the hard-core conservative base of the gop does not even come close to enough people to make up a majority of people that could win an election. i believe that with people like palin rising in the ranks of the gop, then moderates will be pushed out. this, in turn, will actually hurt the republican party's chances in the not-so-near future. right now she does well because there is a backlash from what people see as a too liberal administration, but when this congress or white house changes, then the gop will have to, again, begin to gravitate more toward the center or lose some of its voting base.

You need to check around. The only place she's NOT popular is with the left. True moderates and conservatives (which are most of the people in this country) like her. The fact that the left hates her really makes the right want to suppor her even more. When the left insults and degrades her, they do two things: Expose their fear of her values; and, motivate her supporters to work even harder on her behalf. Oh, and books sales are doing great.

What the left doesn't understand is that their ideas and value system is not somehow more evolved than anyone else's. They remind me of a pack of yorkies trying to scare away a strange dog. Lots of loud yapping, but no real bite behind all that bark.

Expose their fear of her values

I would imagine that there have been numerous polls and other studies that tried to determine this, so that could probably be googled. But without knowing for sure, I have the impression that the numbers on both the left and right are approximately equal-- with also a large number of "moderates", "independents", m"middle-of-the road" types. In tersm of presidential elections-- it seems we elect someone of one party, and they control the office for a few terms-- then the pendulum swings the other way-- and then back.

Exactly. I just have fun messing with the people who have the delusion that any president they did not vote for won by cheating ( the birthers come to mind), that somehow if they did not vote for the president it means America did not vote for him. And before you ask I have run across some who really think this.

Conservatives generally watch insipid game shows like Wheel of Furtune, Price is Right, and FoxNews.

Actually I find Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy kind of fun because I can often outperform the studio contestants. Just because you're not bright enough do the same doesn't make the shows insipid.

I hear a lot of right wingers saying the left is going to be upset with SNL, but I have not heard anyone on the left complaining. I thought the skit was funny, although it went on too long and lost steam. It also wasn't that original borrowing the best lines from Pulp Fiction.

The Palin 2012 movie trailer was much better executed.

i do not think that tappy meant individual posters here on the vine. they are hardly representative of the left, in general. perhaps, the generalities need to stop. it is not wise to lump everyone into one of two boxes. lefties and righties does not count everyone fully or do everyone in the crowd, justice. certainly, the president will not try to censor this as some have suggested. i would hope that he finds it funny because it is.

I was thinking more about the skit last night. Since the right was all in a twist about Obama bowing to leaders of other nations, showing our subservience was their claim instead of just being respectful to their customs, shouldn't Obama have been the one bending over? The Chinese and Saudis own America because they own our debt. We are the ones who would be taking it in an uncomfortable place. Granted it was funnier to have the translator doing Pulp Fiction lines, but it seems like America isn't in the position to dictate policy like the skit inferred.

If anybody wants to know the real reason behind our invasion of Iraq, do some research on Saddam's threat to start trading oil in Euros instead of Dollars. The Chinese can do as they please because they, along with the oil producing states, control the value of the dollar. If they dump their holdings or oil begins trading in Euro, the dollar will collapse along with our economy. The last two years in America will seem like the good old days if that happens.

"Based on truth" is nowhere in the definition of satire... look it up anywhere. You appear to have missed it when you posted the definition before. You want a basis in "truth", how's this: Pres. Obama met with Pres. Jintao, and they had a press conference. That's their basis in truth...

Now, for Christ's sakes, move on to something else already...

Satire ... the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.)...

"Based on truth" is nowhere in the definition of satire... look it up anywhere. You appear to have missed it when you posted the definition before. Oh, Smitty, you're so smart! Obviously it doesn't say "based on truth" in the definition. Who the hell would expect it to be a parody of made-up fiction? By your definition then, we can have the "truth" of "Pres. Obama met with Pres. Jintao, and they had a press conference" turned into Jintao praising Obama's basketball skills, or throwing a gun around threateningly too, right? We have all the "truth" you can bear just by the fact that they met, and all the rest can be made up, right?

Great... I see a future parody of Mitch McConnell getting upset over health care reform since his several illigitimate children will no longer need the CHIPS program.... after all, he IS upset over health care reform, is he not? Who cares if it spreads misinformation about Mitch McConnell and his whoremongering ways?

Really? So your argument is that his sole argument that Obama is "unpopular" as Bush and Reagan were after one year is okay... and your argument is just that I shouldn't have mentioned that part about Bush and Reagan. The Obama part was fine with you though.

that is irrelevant to the topic of debate. the question is whether or not it was a lie when the sketch said that zero jobs were created. that was a lie. we all know that there are serious accounting errors in this job count.

Satire has to be based in truth which is then exaggerated to a comedic end. If there is no base truth, there can be no satire. Satire is a method of complaining about something you disagree with. It is pretty hard to disagree with something that doesn't exist.

your argument is flawed because no one ever said that there would not be a net loss of jobs. that is not the argument on that point. the point is, "were jobs saved or created or not?" the answer is yes, even if it was only five freaking jobs. it was actually a lot more than five, like maybe twelve or something.

I was only trying to make the argument that saying "jobs were created" is intellectually dishonest, unless you also disclose the number of jobs lost during the same period. Well, it undermines any point you were trying to make and also makes it seem as if you are deliberately hiding the fact that MANY MANY more jobs were lost than were created. Its an omission of a significant detail and there is a name for this: Intellectual Dishonesty.

If you know something that, if disclosed, would be material to the discussion and, when that subject is raised, attempt to obfuscate the very idea that the information withheld is germaine to the conversation, it simply renders your original point moot and casts doubt on what you say in the future.

fact: jobs have been created or saved. that is the end of this story.

Ahh, but the crucial question is how many. There's the fabricated, inflated numbers that Obama's spin machine is dishing up, and then there's the stark reality Washington doesn't want you to know.

The stimulus has had an abysmally poor ROI, not to mention the usual suspects (crooks and fraudsters) are sharing in the wealth. But what can you expect when career politicians who have no business acumen whatsoever try their hands at being businessmen?

As for job creation, when the recession deepens again the number of job losses will swamp the number of jobs created. The net result will be millions more unemployed. Many will lose their employer-provided health care as I did in 2001. Two markets may very well see some job growth then: undertakers and gravediggers.

A mere handful. My property is about an acre and a half. If I go out for five minutes and rake leaves, I can say leaves have been raked. If the day is windy, more leaves will have fallen onto my yard than I have raked.

Net effect: the yard is deeper in leaves than when I began. It makes no sense for me to brag that I've taken a few of them off.

it is disingenuous for some posters to say that obama has done nothing or that no, meaning zero, jobs have been created.

I don't say he's done nothing. I say he's committed an egregiously large sum of money to create or save a woefully poor number of jobs. It's hands-down the single most ill-conceived, reckless and dangerous thing I've seen a president do in my 54 years as an American.

The national debt is the elephant in the middle of the living room. When it comes due, you'll grasp the gravity and foolhardiness of the stimulus.

also, not all of the monies were for job creation. in my county, county highways were paved. no jobs were created or saved there, but the new roads were sorely needed. a lot of the criticisms do not take that money and subtract it when compiling numbers for money spent versus jobs created. infrastructure expenditures like that should be subtracted from the trillion dollars or whatever, but it isn't.

And why pray tell did the president and Congress decide to commit money for infrastructure now when federal revenues are falling as a result of the recession? Belt-tightening is in order, but the spendthrift feds are doing exactly the opposite. What would you do if you have to take a big cut in pay? Go out and buy a new Hummer?

in my county, county highways were paved

And why pray tell was the federal government paying for paving of county highways, again in an era of falling revenues? You know a few months ago while driving on I-81 in Pennsylvania I saw a large sign on the side of the road bragging that construction in progress was funded by ARRA. That segment of highway though was in good shape and all the "construction" did was create huge traffic jams as both directions of traffic had to be sequenced through a one-lane bottleneck. Creating "work" that just makes problems for motorists and truckers isn't a proper use of federal funds.

our hatred for traffic slowing due to construction aside, the stimulus funds were given to individual states and then the states determined which counties and municipalities would get the funds. here in our little rural county we have had a hard time making ends meet for years and now we have paved a small portion of the highways that are in disrepair. the goal was to improve infrastructure as well as create jobs. the need for infrastructure improvements was never so evident after the bridge collapse in minnesota. good infrastructure promotes public safety, and i am all for that.

the goal was to improve infrastructure as well as create jobs

Those are Obama's talking points that he used as a carrot to sell that massive pile of @!$%# called ARRA to Congress and the people back in January.

Improving the infrastructure is per se a wholesome goal. It's how it's being funded that's the problem. I've already discussed that and the peril it places the nation in in the last two paragraphs of #18.29.

Fixing a few roads and bridges here and there in exchange for driving the entire nation closer to bankruptcy is a very foolish plan, which will cost us all dearly in the long run.

Enjoy that infrastructure while you can.

while we may have some serious deficiencies in our economy, it remains to be seen where will end up. i suppose that if we keep our relationship with china strong (we have gone about it the wrong way, but they love us), then we will be fine. they do not want to see us tank, for they have a large stake in our economy and it doing well. also, since the new plan is to use pay as you go, then theorhetically, the debt will stabilize after a while. i am not saying that it will work, but i am saying that it could. hopefully it will. at least paygo is a step in the right direction. i would think that the right would applaud this.

the sketch was hilarious. you need to lighten up. i know that you do not like obama and i did not say that you need to do so. however, i still wonder how the sketch was too close to the truth. it was the crazy exaggerations that made it so funny. are we deeply in debt to china? yes, and that is disturbing. however, there were some exaggerations there. there have been way more than zero jobs created or saved. that would be an example of an exaggeration to get a laugh.

The Right is comparing this skit with the one which destroyed Sarah Palin. The Palin skit will be replayed for decades -- it's a Rembrandt; no one will remember the Obama/China skit more a day or two -- It's a stick figure drawing. Goobers can't tell the difference. The opening skit is usually good. This week the Palin 2012 movie trailer was awesome. Weekend Update is hit or miss but usually scores a few good jokes. (Don't design your library to show the lights on when nobody's home was killer last week)

But beyond a few bits, SNL is a shell of its former self. Thankfully through the magic of the DVR, the lame parts can be skipped.

SNL used to be funny !............... But it's beginning to slowly slip into something seedy, and even hints on support from Fox News and other mindless entities that doesn't want the President to succeed in getting America back on solid ground !

This skit was totally tasteless, and wrong if it were targeted at anyone else and his wife, let alone the President of the US. Whether it be the Palins, the Bushes or God forbid.... Billy Graham himself, it was wrong, and I have stopped watching SNL lately, because their skits started to become anything but funny !

This was just posted-- another really great satire! China Says U.S. Too Big To Fail, Offers Obama Bailout:

During the recent meeting with President Obama, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao minced no words when he stated that "immediate action is necessary to keep a once prosperous nation" from falling flat on its face. "If the U.S. economy collapses, so will China because we are so heavily invested in your country," said Wen Jiabao. "We thought we were investing in a nation of the world's greatest entrepreneurs, but a recent analysis shows that America has become little more than a home to overpaid union workers, whiney media, and spoiled welfare recipients.
