"it turns out that most canned foods (even "USDA Organic") contain plastic liners that leach potentially dangerous chemicals into the food. The most notable contaminant is Bisphenol-A (BPA), a powerful hormone disruptor that has been linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems. Only two canned food companies in the nation were found not to contain any BPA!

I always keep a few cans of Eden's Rice and Beans on hand for 'emergencies"(they make several varieties-- and recently introduced some "ethnic' varieties of the same-- Mexican-style, Moroccan, etc). I add some veggies and heat and eat-- for a quick, easy and very healthy meal.

Krishna this subject has got my attention and has prompted me to read up on this subject. Thanks for seeding such interesting articles.

Fifty years later, large numbers and quantities of EDCs are being distributed around the globe without adequate consideration of the consequences.

http://www.trans-health.com/displayarticle.php?aid=51

However, DDT is hardly the only endocrine disruptor in existence. Our Stolen Future’s websitelists 85 chemicals which are known to be endocrine disruptors or classes of chemicals such as PCBs and dioxins, which have many variants. Phthalates are often used in plastic food packaging as a softener, and Bisphenol-A is used to line metal cans to eliminate the metallic taste and is commonly found in resins, plastics and dental sealants. Mercury is one of the most widespread EDCs, being present in dental amalgam and childhood vaccines, and lead is commonly found in Seattle water, reportedly due to the corrosion of lead in home plumbing because corrosive chemicals are used for disinfecting the water. [Source] Mercury is a special case, in that it is the only known endocrine disruptor which is deliberately implanted in the body. (dental amalgam contains 50% mercury) The pesticides, of which there are many, are intentionally released into the environment, often in homes and schools. Additionally, the vast majority of chemicals currently in production have never been tested for endocrine disruption effects.

So is it a coincidence that since the introduction of the chlorinated pesticides around 1935-1940 that the rate of transsexualism has been climbing steadily? The first generation born after the introduction of pesticides was also the first generation to have significant numbers of transsexuals. The condition is virtually absent from the US historical record prior to 1952, when Christine Jorgensen made headlines. Every generation since has had higher and higher rates. Clearly researchers knew that sexual developmental changes were observed with DDT in animals as early as 1950, yet this information was ignored, deliberately or not.

This line of inquiry which is examining the relationship between EDCs and transsexualism has an obvious relationship to the civil rights and social perceptions of transsexuals. It will likely lead toward restoration of full civil rights as the law catches up with emerging science, and should also increase understanding among the general public as more evidence is uncovered and as doctors improve their understanding of the specific biochemical changes and structural effects that are associated with exposure to EDCs during development. For more information on this topic, visithttp://www.antijen.org/transadvocate— a transgender advocacy group co-founded by myself and Angela Kimble— with the mission of educating the transgendered community and the general public about the relationship between endocrine disruptors and gender variance, and to advocate on behalf of the transgendered community for full civil rights.

You're welcome :-)

So much of what's on NV is petty political in-fighting-- its started to get boring (plus rather non-productive, as in most cases neither side is actually even listening to what the other is saying). So many liberals are posting comments attempting to prove that Glenn Beck or Dick Cheney are idiots and are leading the country (and the world) to disaster-- and think that posting that proves how clever they are. So many conservatives post comments attempting to show that Olbermann or Obama are idiots and are leading the country (and the world) to disaster-- and think that posting that proves how clever they are. (The first few times it was interesting-- but after a while it really gets boring-- and iIMO it is ultimately extremely unimportant in the scheme of things-- well, that's just my opinion :)

But there are real issues that do effect us-- and that we could do something about-- if people were aware of them.

One serious concern is the widespread presence of dangerous toxins in the environment (the term "environement" including, but not limited to, meaning-- the food we eat and the liquids we drink!).

In many cases potentially dangerous chemicals, as we don't yet know all their negative effects..but there are beginning to be some indications that may be cause for alarm.

IMO the first step toward change is to collect information and find out about these things-- and to make this information more widely known.

This may not be as much fun as spending time arguing about Glenn Beck, Nancy Pelosi, or the teapartiers sign boards-- but it may ultimately, IMO, be more productive...

Would like to see Oprah do a segment on environmental toxins and the detrimental effects these toxins are having on the human race. The masses need to be informed and she is the megaphone to the masses.

The person who may be responsible for more food-related illness and death than anyone in history has just been made the US food safety czar. This is no joke.

Although adult foods are known to contain these endocrine disruptors, virtually no data have been published on amounts in baby foods--an odd data gap, considering that exposure during infancy could he important.

This is now an old article. I recently came across an article that lists companies that use BPA-free cans. Eden of course. Also, Wild Planet, Edward & Sons, Eco Fish, and Oregon's Choice. I have been using Eden beans, as well as their rice and beans (all organic) for some time. Recently came across Wild Planet canned fish. (Eden has expanded their can grain and beans line-- some tasty stuff-- for example, Black beans and Quinoa).

Very informative. I forgot about the lining used in canned foods. Another layer of concern to research more and look into. Thanks for the reminder, and the update.

I think we will be hearing much more about this in the near future. (of course there are other problems as well-- and let's not overlook pthalates).

Its rather shocking what industry has decided to expose us to!
