"Refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup are considered by many experts to be the biggest contributors to obesity and poor health in Western civilization.

In her book What To Eat, Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition at NYU and blogger at Food Politics suggests that any food that contains more than 15 grams of sugar per serving is closer to dessert than anything else. Though this number is arbitrary, it is a good benchmark for evaluating food products.

Just for fun I looked up the sugar content of a few common foods and menu items. I hope you’re as horrified as I am.

Sugar.......mmmmmmmmm.........nom nom nom........COOKIES!!!

Sorry, I need to work on my "horrified" responses, LOL

I look at it this way. When I die...I'll die because I'm SICK...not because I'm healthy. I'll die with a chocolate chip cookie in one hand and a giant coffee mocha in the other.................and a huge smile on my face.

;-P

Actually that does raise an interesting question. A lot of these articles give suggestiojs for (allegedly) living linger.

But, a relevant question to ask may be-- what's the point of living longer if you aren't enjoying life?

Mmmm Luna bars. At 11 grams they aren't too scary...but I do consider them a kind of dessert. My healthy equivalent of a candy bar or danish. A bit high in sugar but lots of fiber, protein and vitamins. I'm surprised the Krispy Kreme donut is so low...then they are mostly air. Not surprised by the juices...I never drink juice (weight problem). Juice is great if you can burn a lot of calories (hubby swills tons) but for those of us with slow metabolisms it is the dietary kiss of death! I have to have my juice while it is still in the fruit *grin*.

Don't people enjoy life without tons of processed sugar?? I do. I had a vegan cupcake last month (OK two) and felt so sick for the next two days. Now that I see a cupcake is about 50 grams of sugar I can see why I was sick. I'm not used to that much sugar any more!

I never thought juice was a healthy idea-- it basically takes fruits or vegetables and removes one of the things with health benefits-- fiber. (Plus juicing raises the glycemic index...)

Apparently some people feel they can't. The more I learn about nutrition, the more I've come to realize how different people are in that regard. (One major complaint about many nutrition "experts"-- they seem to feel that "one size fits all"-- many have one set of "rules" for eating healthy that they feel should apply to everyone.
