Recent police figures show Oslo has more cases of rape per capita than the other Scandinavian capitals, despite authorities’ efforts to tackle the problem in July. The number of reported rapes has also increased by 84 percent since 2001.

Herdis R. Magerøy, general manager of DIXI Resource Centre for rape victims, finds the results “shocking”.

“I am appalled at the numbers of assault rapes in Oslo. It’s unbelievable that things are so much worse here than in Stockholm or Copenhagen,” she tells NRK.

Your article addresses the cause a bit more thoroughly, don't you think?

Yes, focusing more on the results of culture clash. The Scandinavian countries are very open. The women do not have to be escorted or cover up - the immigrants come from a society where that is considered shameful - they then believe that the women are asking for it! And knowing that where they come from takes 4 male witnesses to be found guilty, they feel confident of getting away with the crime.

If you emigrate to a country, you need to adjust to their norms not vice versa.

I think I missed that one-- I will check it out.

Thanks for the link. :)

Not at all krishna, I wasn't clear in my response. It seems to be an issue of outside cultural influence. A country that values freedom and tolerance as much as Norway is ill-equipped to deal with the influx of individuals from an extremely repressive culture.

Oh OK-- now I see what you mean.

Its obviously true-- and a lot of other countries in Europe seem to be having somewhat similar problems (perhaps to a lesser extent).

Let me put some better perspective on this. There is aprx. 125,000 Muslims in Oslo. Also they are reported rapes, not convicted ones. I would like to see the statistics for convicted if it can be provided. Also since apparently no Norwegians are criminals any minority there could be more prone to crime, what if there was 100,000 poor Americans living in Oslo ghettos? Think about that.

Are you saying that there is no crime in Norway?

Also since apparently no Norwegians are criminals

And what about all these rapes (regardless of whether they are actually committed by indigenous Norwegians or recent arrivals).

Do you not consider rape to be a crime?

Well, perhaps its a foolish thing to do on my part-- but I generally operate on the assumption that people mean what they say.

The one problem I can think of offhand is that occasionally comes up is, of course, with sarcasm. If its not indicated as such its hard to know if its sarcasm or not.

But generally, i assume that people say what they mean-- and mean what they say. (Well-- in rare cases I have seen a few people who do tend to lie fairly regularly-- but that's really rather uncommon)
