In a barrage of mortar shells, Syrian forces killed 200 people and wounded hundreds in Homs in an offensive that appears to be the bloodiest episode in the nearly 11-month-old uprising, activists said Saturday.

Two main opposition groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, said the death toll in Homs was more than 200 people and included women and children in mortar shelling that began late Friday. More than half of the killings — about 140 — were reported in the Khaldiyeh neighborhood.

Buzz of the Orient

I cannot comprehend how the civilized world can stand around and watch this happening. The Arab League monitors were nothing more than useless lip service. We KNOW the Security Council is helpless because of expected vetoes from Russia and/or China, so the slaughter will continue.

Its because they are Arabs. No one cares.

Well, the be a bit more clear-- generally speaking, when Arabs are killed, tortured, or otherwise treated inhumanely by other Arabs, there's not much interest. (Witness the ongoing horrendous suicide bombing between the Sunni and Shiite in Iraq for example. And, of course, the current nightmare in Syria. Or the torture and murder of Fatah sympathizers by Hamas).

However, if even a single Arab is killed by America or Israel-- it makes the front page and the world screams bloody murder. (And, btw, this is usually true regardless of the circumstances).

Buzz of the Orient

If Ebeneezer Scrooge were around, we would expect him to approve because what's happening is "reducing the excess population." How different it is from the words of the Talmud, that to save one life is to save te whole world. The adherence to that philosophy was proven by what had to be done to gain the release of Gilad Shalit.

Life seems to be pretty cheap in Arab countries.

The move toward a vote came after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke by telephone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an effort to overcome Russian opposition to any statement that explicitly calls for regime change or a military intervention in Syria.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Gennady Gatilov, said Friday that Moscow could not support the resolution in its current form.

Of course not, then they would be prevented from delivering the huge supply of armaments to Assad.

Exactly!

Russia cares not at all about human suffering-- money and their arms trade is much more important to them.

However, there's also another factor. Syria under Assad is an important Russian ally-- and one of the few in the region. If Assad is overthrown, the new regime is not going to be friendly with Russia at all. So Russia risks losing a major stronghold in the Middle East (as well as its Naval base at a major Syrian port).
